If a tree branch falls on a power line, it can cause a power outage.

Electricity will go off in any homes or businesses served by the power line until the electric utility can remove the branch and fix the line. If a tree branch touches a high-voltage power line, electricity from the line can make the branch so hot it catches fire. From there, the fire can spread to nearby trees, plants, or buildings. In most cases, Cobb EMC crews can restore power to your home if the service line simply came loose from your house and no other damage was caused.
However, if any equipment (e.g., the mast pipe, weather-head or meter base) has been pulled off your house by a fallen tree, Cobb EMC cannot restore power to your house until this is fixed. Mar 06, Late Tuesday, Cobb EMC members were without power for 53 minutes after a tree fell on a power line at Shallowford and Bells Ferry roads, Cobb EMC spokesman Mark Justice said.
Dec 12, PECO: If a tree falls on power lines after a storm PECO states: “Our first priority in response to any storm is to restore electric service to customers as quickly and as safely as possible, and to keep electrical facilities safe.
